Who would have thought that America would be the country to "drop the bomb." But on August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945 the United States of America dropped an atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki of Japan (Rosenberg 1). The reason for this attack can only be described as pay-back for the ambush on Pearl Harbor and the ongoing fighting between America and Japan. Though these attacks were beneficial for the United States they would have not been successful if it were not for the genius behind them. Julius Robert Oppenheimer, also known as "Father of the Atomic Bomb", was the man responsible for creating the atomic and hydrogen bombs (Rosenberg 1). Oppenheimer was appointed to work on the Manhattan Project, which was the research project for creating the atomic bomb, in the July of 1942. Production of the bomb took a little over 3 years and when it was finally dropped, the attacks were a success. "The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are arguably the most important and most sinister development in warfare in the 20th century" (Turnbull and Holmes 4). The bombings signify the severity of the situation over-seas, and they expressed the attitude of America as "no one is safe and anything can happen." This quote fits because of the suprising drop of the bombs. Those two cities were completely devestated, and America felt no sorrow. In an interview with J. Robert Oppenheimer he quoted, "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" (Wikipedia 1). Oppenheimer was shocked by the weapon's killing power after it was used to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Wikipedia 1).
